Engineering reference

The tables engineers look up every day, in one place and free to use: ISO 286 limits and fits with a calculator, ISO 2768 general tolerances, the RAL Classic colour chart, the material grades we stock, and quick calculators for weight, bend allowance, tap drills and units. Built by the engineers at Zedaxis Engineering Solutions, Coventry.

ISO 286 limits & fits

Limits are computed from the ISO 286-1 standard tolerance grades (IT) and fundamental deviations. Values in micrometres (µm) unless stated; deviations are relative to the nominal size. Covers nominal sizes over 0 up to 500 mm.

Fit calculator

Hole tolerances Shaft tolerances Preferred fits IT grades

Upper / lower deviation for each hole class, µm. H-holes are the hole-basis system (lower deviation 0).

Upper / lower deviation for each shaft class, µm. h-shafts are the shaft-basis system (upper deviation 0).

The ISO 286 preferred fits. Use the hole-basis column unless you have a reason not to — standard reamers and bores are cheaper than standard shafts.

Standard tolerance grades IT5–IT14, µm. IT6–IT7 are typical for fits; IT9–IT11 for non-mating turned and milled features; IT12–IT14 for sheet and fabrication.

Engineering rule of thumb: specify the fit (e.g. Ø30 H7/g6) rather than raw limits, and put the fit on the feature that needs it only. Every fit you call out is a feature we measure — the quoting tool reads ISO fits from your drawing and prices them at review.

General tolerances — ISO 2768 & ISO 13920

ISO 2768 applies to dimensions without an individual tolerance on machined and sheet-metal parts; ISO 13920 does the same job for welded constructions. Zedaxis works to ISO 2768-mK and ISO 13920-B unless your drawing states otherwise.
